KevinV1990 Posted March 26, 2017 Posted March 26, 2017 (edited) For me reading was a great way to withstand the temptations of playing videogames. Now reading has become a real hobby, and I try to read many different books.Bacause I know that many people start to read when they stop gaming, I thought it is fun to talk about the last book you read, and recommend it (or not) to other readers. Maybe you can give other people an idea of what to read next.---The last book I read, was Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. This is the first James Bond book, the one which the first Daniel Craig movie is based off. It is nice a nice thing to read, how well the movie stayed true to the book, the movie only has been adjusted to the 21st century. The book starts off slowly, but after the first baccarat game, the story got so intense, which made me not want to put the book away. A must read for everyone! Edited March 26, 2017 by KevinV1990
giblets Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 Buddhism for Beginners by Thubten Chodron. It is a book that is basically a "FAQ". Each chapter poses a question about Buddhism and their beliefs or concepts, then spends the rest of the chapter explaining it in basic terms that anyone can understand. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and it could be a good read for even non-Buddhists if you are curious about what they believe in. All it did for me was cause me to want to know more and study more about it. It talks about meditation and calming techniques which might be useful for people in this forum.

Maybe I should start with that book. The last book I read was Fuck It by John Parkin. It is a book about letting go, relaxing, and be happy. I can recommend this book to every game quitter out there, as you will learn a lot about accepting who you are, accepting your feelings, and also accepting your bad sides. 1
KevinV1990 Posted April 20, 2017 Author Posted April 20, 2017 Hilarious title! I'll add it to my list. You should, it learns you many things about yourself and about life, but in a funny way. That is something what I miss in many self development books, they sometimes can be written in such a boring way.Read another book: Eat that Frog by Brian Tracy. Another funny title, but again a very helpful book about how to stop procrastinating.
Schwing Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien! Good book for LOTR nerds like me.
Vincent Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 The last book I read is "How to Talk to Anyone" by Leil Lowndes. I think it is a good book to read if you have already read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and want to read another book on the same subject that gives a bit more specific advice.I have also read "Eat that Frog". Concerning books about how to stop procrastinating, I can also recommend "Procrastination, Why You Do It, What to Do about It Now" by Burka and Yuen.
KO Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 Previously reading The Art of Not Giving a Fuck, put the book on hold but I enjoyed the content. Much different than the generic self-help nonsense you get. The concepts discussed in the book are applicable, like have a value system and holding yourself accountable. Currently reading The Slight Edge after various recommendations, not far in yet.
timon Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Guys, just finnishing up the Dune series. It is amazing! As @KevinV1990 said, it is a great alternative to gaming. Especially if there are compelling stories!
KevinV1990 Posted January 15, 2018 Author Posted January 15, 2018 I have recently read Lion by Saroo Brierley, and what a great book it was. I now started reading A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, and I think this book will make it to my all-time favorites list.
JoeFish Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 The inheritance cycle by Christopher paolini - basically lord of the rings on steroids.
AgentTom Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 The Bhagavad Gita. If you want to get a taste of Hinduism, this is a good starting point. I was raised Catholic but am fascinated by Hinduism. I find that Hinduism aligns with my spiritual beliefs more than Catholicism. I'd like to read the Upanishads and then the rest of the Gitas. Maybe that's something I should do now! Cheers!
Libresianus Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Where Is God When It Hurts? by Philip Yancey, one of few christians whose writing is not ignorant/judgmental and is actually sym/empathetic. He writes about how 12 steps groups (which GameQuitters reminds me of) is effective & compassionate as a community. Shit I'm ranting. Sorry.
Guest Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 Ursula K. Le Guin - A Wizard of Earthsea Originally published in 1968, Ursula K. Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea marks the first of the six now beloved Earthsea titles. Ged was the greatest sorcerer in Earthsea, but in his youth he was the reckless Sparrowhawk. In his hunger for power and knowledge, he tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tumultuous tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance. Book about overcoming fear!
Recovering Posted February 2, 2019 Posted February 2, 2019 Phillip K Dick - Ubik. One of his best book I have read so far. For all fans of Science Fictions I recommend it. Phill has been recognized for developing his own style.

I read this one )) Was really curious because of the title but it was worth it. Yesterday was reading this article about investing into Lisbon real estate and all advantages and disadvantages of it. Needed to do so because of my studies. This weekend will start War and Piece by Tolstoy
GCepeda Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 I haven't read as much as I used to, but the book I keep coming back to is 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson. It's not really the type of book you read from beginning to end (although you can certainly do that), but its something I keep coming back to in small segments. There's a lot of useful advice on how to life on a day to day. Def helpful for people like me who have lived a chaotic life for the past several years. Outside of this, the other book I occasionally visit is called Meeting The Shadow by Connie Zweig and Jeremiah Abrams. Peterson's work sparked my interest in psychology / philosophy, and this book neatly arranges the findings of prominent psychologists, like Carl Jung and John Pierrakos. If you guys want a good story, I can recommend any of the Robert Langdon series books by Dan Brown. He's known for the Da Vinci Code, but I also love his other books, like Angels and Demons and The Lost Symbol. It's so easy to get lost in those books ?
zeke365 Posted February 22, 2019 Posted February 22, 2019 I m reading book called skin map where person travels to worlds in some sense but one those books that starts off strong then gets boring torwards the middle and try’s to pick up again. not enjoyable as I had hoped but I will still complete because I dislike having books half read.
songphaicotam Posted February 24, 2019 Posted February 24, 2019 They are balck diamond, manitgames, vunerable people.
Meghan D Smith Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 My ID is Gangnam Beauty (as I like its TV series) One Smile Is Very Alluring (as I love playing games and mantigames) Pride and Prejudice (one of my all-time favs)
princess32 Posted March 13, 2019 Posted March 13, 2019 I'm reading a horror, detective novel. I found it on a reading app from top1apk. The author of this novel is a chinese couple. This novel is about a haunted room of a chinese campus. I haven't finished it yet. But, i find it very interesting. The writing style will bring you to China with various cultural features in the story. Moreover, the author also makes me feel like i have some illusion like the main character because sometimes it's very difficult to differentiate reality and illusion. The spiritual factors are combined with criminal ones. I can say this novel is really good.
SilentQ Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 Our Lady of the Ice Just a simple mystery novel in an hab dome in Antarctica. I was travelling and it was on sale for $5. Easy read and great for speed reading.
darkmaul Posted April 10, 2019 Posted April 10, 2019 I have been reading some Nietzsche and Jung recently; also I became passionate about psychological tests, this is the last jung test online I took. Jung says very interesting things about the Shadow (the inner, dark personality). It's really helpful to me, considering how much trouble I'm having recently.
