Sign up for “Momentum" May 2016 here!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the fifth official sign-up thread for “Momentum" May 2016!

Use this thread to share your commitment to abstain from playing video games for the entire month of May 2016.

  • Our goal as a community is to have 1,000 members complete the 90 day detox this year, allowing us to quantify the impact of not gaming within your quality of life. We currently have 289/1000 members signed up. We need your help to accomplish this goal!
  • To sign-up and participate in this study of our community, click here.

New to StopGaming?

  • Learn about the importance of the 90 day "no gaming" detox here
  • If you are committed to your 90 day detox, sign up for this month by replying to this thread.
  • To track your progress setup a badge on StopGaming. We also recommend using an app like Coach.me or a whiteboard/calendar in your room. (Working on getting badges one here soon.)
  • Document your progress in a daily journal. Having a daily journal will help you clarify your thoughts, process your experience and gain extra support.
  • Ask questions and get support by posting on Game Quitters. The more involved you can be in the community, the more likely you are to succeed.
  • We have added an option to get an accountability partner this month. Post your own thread here and find an accountability partner.

Ready to join? Reply to this thread and answer the following:

  • What is your commitment? No games? No streams? Anything else?
  • How long do you want this challenge to last? By default it is one month, but 90 days is recommended for your detox.
  • What are your goals?
  • Why are you doing this?

Is it past the first of the month?

No worries. You can still join in. Add your commitment and start your detox today!

Thanks to /r/nofap for the inspiration. If this thread provides value we can continue to do them each month.

I would like to join this if it's not too late! I don't use reddit, but I will be actively using the forums.

  • I commit to not playing video games, watching video-game related youtube videos or reading any video-gaming related news sources
  • I will be doing a detox for 90 days, starting 03/05/2016
  • I want to use my time to become a beast in other areas of my life that will be recognised by my friends, family and colleagues. These include creating more value for my company and training for a marathon in October
  • I am doing this not only to put into practice the things I have learnt in my self-development readings over the last few months, but also to complete a very difficult challenge. I am certain that this will be one of the most difficult challenges I've attempted in my life.

Thanks for reading, and good luck.

  • I will remain committed to not play video games of any kind.
  • I will continue to smash my goals and strengthen my willpower even more!
  • I WILL lose 4 pounds by the end of this month.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi guys, been 3 weeks now.  Went by pretty quickly actually.

Today (Monday) I'm starting to eat better too.  I know how to do this, but just been quite lazy, and drinking lots of alcohol too.

Hope everyone else is going well.

Hey guys what do you think about watching people play poker on YouTube?

I never used to do this, but have seen the odd bits on the tv.  Now I find I'm watching quite a bit, say an hour a day of various poker games.

Watching is one thing. I'm not one to encourage playing. I tried for a bit and it was way too similar to the skill/competition/hyper-action of gaming.

Hmmm ok.  Well that makes me think I might need to stop watching it then.

In the past when I've watched SC2 videos, I always go and play.  Poker doesn't have anywhere near the same pull, but it might do one day...

Thanks for your thoughts Cam.

An update on my detox, which started 11th of May (Not sure if I should be posting this in my journal instead?): It's hard to explain in a couple of sentences without going into my history, but I've felt zero desire to play and 100% revulsion. It's just that gaming reached such a level of sickness for me, that there was no way forth but out of it. This time it wasn't just my brain and heart telling me to stop. It was my body too - heart pain and trouble sleeping.

I am now free to live and explore other approaches to that which is the driving force behind the addiction (which has simply transferred itself to another addiction: clothes shopping). Overall though, I feel light, free.
