NEW VIDEO: Psychologist's WARNING About VIDEO GAMES

(MAY BE TRIGGERING) I am not sure if I should sell my console

Recommended Posts

I am leaving for a missions trip soon and was thinking about selling my Switch. My mom and sister (I haven’t told my dad but he will likely object as well) are very much against this idea. They say it is hurtful to my mom since she had gotten it for me as a gift. My sister also points out that I use it all the time so it is not without at least some value. My sister tells me I should just practice self-control since I can still use my games sometimes.

I am torn. I used to definitely have an addiction to gaming. However, since going to college I haven’t had much opportunity to game. I also have somewhat grown out of the addiction. However, whenever I get onto minecraft, it is like I cannot help myself. I will legit play for hours upon hours even though I have other stuff that needs to get done. I also struggle a lot with an addiction to using the internet… I have a porn blocker on, but when it is not on I have a lot of issues with that too.

I was away for 3 months and the only game I had was pokemon go. I am back home and ever since I have been having massive issues with using my phone and playing minecraft.

Let me know if you have any questions and what your opinion is about selling the switch. Thanks!

suppose i would just give the console back to her and spare myself the family drama if that's going to be a thing. if it was a console I had bought I would just throw it away or sell it depending on market value. if I could do it again I would have taken the console apart then stuff it with at least a hundred-rounds of firecrackers and have a bit more fun with it.

It sounds like you really want to put it away but family obligations are stopping you.   I would reckon put the Switch into storage/shed while you're on mission and say you're doing it so you don't lose it or have it damaged. Then just forget about it. If anyone asks  "Oh, I should get that out sometime." and then don't.

If you decide you want to continue using it - perhaps see if there are apps that you can install to help with restrictions? Another helpful thing to do is work out statements.
Example: "I am allowed to play on Switch on Mondays from 5-6pm." and then keep a diary of you doing that so if you ever dont do it - you see it yourself and know you need to take a break from it.

But mostly, I'd recommend re-reading the "Respawn" book again especially the first few chapters as it talks about finding replacement activities which should be useful for you.
