Hi, I think it may have come to your mind, because I often comment on the situation of my grandma here.
Seeing a person deteriorate is disheartening. A relative (or friend) dying "out of nowhere" is a shock, but it allows people to grieve immediately. Seeing the person dying for months, slowly losing control of their mind and body, being unable to help, or even convince her to seek medical attention, due to a weird mix of overconfidence/paranoia/dementia...
That written, I enjoyed visiting my grandma and I'm happy and grateful for the fact that she was independent and doing quite well up until a year ago or so. I also think I improved the relationship with my mom over the last few months.
