Howto: Blocking websites with keywords(on firefox)

Because it is hard to control yourself in the start of your gamequitting journey some of us may wish they had a guard who prevents them from downloading games or watch game related content

I found out that there is a great add-on for firefox which let you do this(leechblock). You can specify there which websites you want to have blocked. For example you can set it in a way you can't go on youtube/reddit between 8:00 and 17:00. It is actually pretty flexible and you can even set a amount of time per hour where you allowed to watch some sites.

Another awesome feature is that you can specify special keywords which you may want to evade in the internet (I.e. triggers). To do this you have to add something like this instead(/or in addition to) some specified websites:

~blizzard
~porn

the * stands for all sites, the sites followed by + are exceptions and the keywords after ~ are the ones you want to block.

I would advice you to try this out for a week or though and if you found the preferences you like to fix them. To do that mark all squares in the advanced setting of the preferences which will disable you to change your preferences or access your add-ons. There are ways to reset this of course, but it will take some effort to do so.

WorkInProgress, how do you block specific terms? I use Leechblock, but when I want to start a new blocking rule, I can only add specific websites, it says to "enter the domains," so I guess I must put website addresses in there? Anyway, I was looking for something which would stop me from entering certain keywords into search engines, rather than blocking specific websites, in my case searches related to popular TV series rather than games. It would be great if Leechblock could do the job, as I already use it.

 You put that keywords  where it says you should enter the domain areas. Just copy what I wrote here and fill in your own exceptions and keywords :

+EXCEPTION2

~KEYWORD2

 

After the + you put the exceptions(the websites you want to access even if they have the specified keyword. After the ~ you put the keywords you want to block. Don't forget the * in the first line. Good Luck

I wonder how blocking the keywords works, if I block the series "Game of Thrones," and there is a a discussion about the series on my favourite Tolkien forum, does it mean that I would not be able to access the entire forum, or only the threat dedicated to Game of Thrones? Also, I would like to know if there is a way to block something (either specific websites or keywords) for a particular period of time, e.g. the 90 days of detox. This Lent I wanted to block websites about my favourite TV series only for the length of Lent, so I simply removed the block after Lent, but maybe there is a way to set up how long (in days) a block should work? There is only an option to choose days of the week, but I want to block for a specific period of time such as a month or more. How to do it?

I think there is no way to block the length in days.

In your case it would block the whole site where the word game of thrones appears. If the the thread title is game of thrones it would block the whole forum. to evade this you could of course make an exception rule for the Tolkien forum.
