Massive craving I’m trying to beat

It’s my 6th day quitting games. I am bored out of my mind and can’t be near my computer which I need to program on. I feel the craving and constant urge to re-download league of legends and play till the end of the day. What am I supposed to do this seems incredibly difficult. Can I beat this? My life has been improving but I feel a depressive relapse coming on. Don’t know if I can win I’m trying my best everyone. I’m fighting hard.

best,

NICK

Went outside and laid in the sun for half an hour. Feel better but still mild depression is still there. Losing a part of your identity can leave a big hole I assume. Going to take a cold shower and workout. A lot of sun today and will most likely get sunburnt, however I’m pretty tan actually so hopefully not. This day shall pass and a better time will come. Thank you all for the support with this transition as it is very hard for me. Very hard. Hard work builds character.

I’m still feeling a massive craving and am really just sitting here twiddling my thumbs. Actually so bored and feeling sad. The good news is that I know that if I played league of legends right now, it would lead to binging for 2-3 days on end.. then a possible relapse of porn.. and then a day of depression before I got back to my routine of 5:30am wake up, reading for 2 hours a day and coding for 2 hours a day. Trying to beat this 2 week cycle I’ve been facing for the past few months. Withdrawals hurt

Keep fighting man! Try to find other activities to fill your time with. I’m just getting into computer programming myself and I’m really enjoying it. If you can’t be near your computer, try some offline activities that you can spend a lot of time doing. I know reading is a good one, but preferably something more interactive and engaging that you can spend a good deal of time doing would be ideal. Maybe learning a new instrument! The last thing you want to do is to give up at such a critical moment. You got this!

Another thing, you may want to consider keeping all your entries under one unified thread. That way it’s easier for you and other people to track your progress. All the best!

Hey man, yeah that sounds tough. It's especially hard in those first few weeks and different things work for different people. My suggestion would be going for a walk, taking showers (warm or cold), any exercise that you like or have access to, and meditation.

Basically things that are offline and get you into your body and awareness. Weights or strength building are really useful for breaking through some of that craving energy. And all of the above activities help rewire your brain to the outside world or how things feel in your body as being stimulating, rather than it being tied to your computer or mental experience.

I found a website that really helped me nail down my reasons for gaming from an episode of the Game Quitters podcast. It's called Quantic Foundry, and there's a quiz you can take that determines your motivations and reasons for gaming. I was an architect type. That meant that I enjoy building things to last, planning and progression. I also enjoy engrossing stories. That helped me find activities that fulfill these specific needs that I feel, like reading, gardening, and fermenting.

Programming is big for me too, and fighting distractions is hard when it's so readily available. I'm fortunate enough to have two computers, an older one that I use for internet browsing, and a newer one that I use for programming and working. Having the separate environments really helps! So if you can, set up different profiles on your computer, or you can move it to a different place in your home then you can start breaking the association.
