  1. It is exactly the same for me, brother. The reason why you find other hobbies daunting and terrible is most likely because you're used to the level of gratification spikes that gaming gives you(surprise, surprise!). Cams talks about this all the time, it can easily be considered a withdrawal syndrome. From the cases I've seen, this can go away for some periods of time - such as when you started your podcast, you've been enjoying doing that. But if you are not determined enough to quit gaming(for at least the 90 days, a good start), the vision of the thrill of gaming will come back and will overpower any other activity. These hobbies might be giving you more long-term satisfaction, but in order to match the level of dopamine-fueled escapism that gaming provides, you'd probably have to shoot heroin, to be honest. I'm rambling again, but what I'm trying to say is that this is quite normal and I am convinced you will start enjoying other hobbies more the longer you go game-free. The same thing applies to social life. I mean, it's not easy to get into if you're not frequently going out etc. It takes some barrier-busting, you need to get out of your comfort zone and get out there with people. For some, it's effortless, but I'm one of those, who have to actually work for it, too! If you keep gaming, you make it so much harder to bust that barrier because you can easily just login into the gaming world and instantly connect with anonymous people doing the same activity as you. There are no repercussions, no trying, no going out of your comfort zone. Within a few clicks, you can connect with somebody. The reason why it's so appealing is that it's so easy. And that is also the reason why we need to cut it out if we want to be more social and build actual relationships. K, enough rambling, hopefully, it makes sense.
  2. Man that is so epic! I've never been to a halloween party. It always sounds like an absolute dream come true. Definitely the best way to spend a time off!
  3. Do you have a day-job besides all this? Trying to moderate almost always leads to a destructive spiral of addiction. Now that you've tried it, you can also feel it ? Keep posting regurarly, it's better than not to, even if you're gaming. When it comes to that though - what are you planning to do?
  4. As with almost all psychological 'issues' - realizing the problem is the first and most important step to improvement. So good job on that. There is this stigma about gaming not being harmful, even among people in their 20's and it's even stronger among people further into life, as they've been raised with games that were not nearly as addictive(or none at all). But nowadays, we know so much about human psychology, marketing and software development that the 'psychological' addiction can be as strong as regular substance abuse, such as alcohol. It's not to say that alcohol is bad, or that games are bad, it's just that we need to realize what effects it has and behave accordingly.
  5. So the website blocking had no effect, hm? You work from home right? I am able to keep my internet escapism down because I minimize the time I spend at home and always work in an open environment among people(except yesterday ? ) so that I don't even think of opening a video - I would be ashamed to show this side of me. Maybe you need some co-working space.
  6. Good job on bouncing back from it so quickly though! Just 1 day of gaming is not bad! Sure it's bad to keep watching streamers/videos, but you stopped that after a week too! Remember your commitment and your 'WHY'. This shit is not easy, but that's just a signal that it's worth it.
  7. Hello and welcome. I suggest considering opening a journal. For me that was a game-changer when it comes to consistency. Good luck on the journey!

    KMD's Journal

I love it!! Where do the challenges come from?
  9. lmao that's not how it works ? I live in Amsterdam and don't smoke, it's fine don't worry.
  10. Okay, well, if you haven't done that yet, get into a good state - get out of bed, jump up and down, maybe do some pushups, or do some power-poses , or do weird shit with your face, whatever you need to do to change your physiology and therefore change your state. Once you are in a better, more conscious state, try to think what you actually want to do. What do you want your life to look like? Think about it and visualize it - imagine 1 year, then 5 years and then 15 years in the future, and then imagine tomorrow, next week and next month. Write down what you need to do and what your obstacles are. Write down what prevented you from succeeding before and how you plan to remedy that. The process of actually writing it down is important. At this point, you should feel a lot of motivation, so make a commitment and an immediate action - just start right away. That's what I would do ?
  11. Going to uni just for social is DEFINITELY a bad idea. Can you think of other ways to add some social life?
  12. Definitely true. But even if you have other hobbies, that doesn't mean you will just do them instead. How many of us had great hobbies and activities, but we instead chose to game? This is because gaming gave more instant gratification and didn't require any effort at all. The same thing with binge watching. It is an instant, gratifying escape from reality and that can be more appealing than any other activity that would actually provide you long-term satisfaction or happiness. So the point is to be very intentional about how you spend your time. Always keeping in mind why you want to quit(games and binge-watching) and always pushing yourself to chose your other activities over escapism, even when you have a bad day or just don't feel good. If things are handy dandy, it's easy, no problem. When things are not going as expected, that is when your COMMITMENT has to come in.
  13. What do you think is the reason you relapsed?
  14. Gaming is perhaps not the core problem, but it's like saying to an alcoholic that the unsatisfaction with life is actually the issue, so feel free to get hammered every night. Or telling a person with a bleeding wound to be more careful with knives. Well damn, of course! But the symptom absolutely needs to be treated, otherwise, we die ? For most, figuratively, but some even literally. Don't let this to be an excuse you will later use to convince yourself to game again. I've done it and it leads to despair.
  15. Yeah if you go to "Account Protection" tab, you can set it up so that it requires a password to disable or uninstall. If you want, I can keep your password for you so that you don't have access unless you ask me ?
  16. Awesome! Online courses can be a fantastic "set it and forget it" way to generate income, from what I hear(if you put it on an established online course platform). By the way, the BlockSite extension just released an update that lets you protect yourself from disabling the extension and from accessing the chrome/mozilla extension settings tab with a password so you can't even uninstall it lol. You can also set-up an e-mail where the password can be recovered or a notification in case the user tries to uninstall it (although I don't even know how that's possible right now).
  17. Good decision to start the journal, it will definitely help you with consistency. Also, wtf is that profile theme ?
  18. Uuu! What's the business idea? Or at least the area or the goals, if you don't want to disclose too much this early ?
  19. Nice meme. Much appreciated. Are you also including your mom? Ohhhhhh..!
  20. To me, a master degree in stem cells sounds much more badass than a medschool graduate ? Is it uncommon to go to medical school right after high school? In Europe, the admission exams tend to be the hardest for medical schools as well, but it's not like you require lab experience or research.
  21. That's incredible how you managed to fill your time so much that you remain productive all the time, especially because there's a lot of interacting with other people. Just one thing I don't understand - you're obviously studying a biology programme at a university, working with stem cells and such, but you mentioned you wanted to get to medical school? Do you just want to change degrees or is the structure different from what I imagine?
  22. Maybe not right off the get-go, but it is 100% possible to set up. What the router block does is it blocks incoming packets coming from a certain IP address. So even if the IP address that is communicating with the phone app is different than the one communicating with your browser netflix, there is one and it can be blocked. I haven't looked if there is an easy way to do this, but theoretically, it's possible.
  23. Alright here are the options(I'm assuming you're on PC, but should be the same for MACs): Browser extensions(browser-level block) - I use BlockSite and StayFocusd on chrome, but if you google for website blocking extensions, you will find a bunch for all browsers It used to be possible to setup StayFocusd such that you wouldn't even be able to open the chrome extension menu and therefore you couldn't disable the extension. In this scenario, the only way to unblock your procrastination website is to reinstall the browser. However, the latest chrome update made this not work anymore, though there might still be some other way. BlockSite can be used to ban certain WORDS from your URL bar - any time the word appears anywhere in the url, it gets blocked. I am using this to ban specific subreddits and in the past even youtubers. Let's say you procrastinate on pewdiepie, you can ban all iterations of "pewdiepie, pew die pie, pewdie pie" and others, so that you aren't even able to search for his name on the internet. Edit the hosts file(OS-level block): https://www.quora.com/How-can-I-block-websites-on-my-computer Edit the wifi router settings(network-level block): https://www.wikihow.com/Block-Unwanted-Site-From-Your-Router The latter two make it quite inconvenient to unblock. Now that I think about it, I should make it one of my future projects to develop a fool-proof way to block channels of procrastination.
